Intel vs Qualcomm vs Samsung. Who makes better Soc. Which Chipset is better.
Many people ask this question, who
makes best mobile processor. Which Soc is best. Which Chipset for mobile is
best.
Simple and straight forward answer
is, all are good. All makes good Soc, and in the end everything boils downs to
money, your preference and usages. In real world situations you will not see
much difference.
Intel used to dominate both Mobile
Computing market and Desktop Market. In past Intel used to manufacture Arm
Instruction set based, Xscale processor, which were considered great and even
best in past. But to propagate x86 in mobile sphere, Intel Sold Xscale and
tried to replace it with Intel Atom. Intel's came late into party as Intel was
never concerned about mobile platform and when it came it failed, Atom never
took off. So essentially, Intel is out of mobile market. As its mobile chips do
not offer features that Arm based Chips Offer.
99.99 Mobile Soc are based On Arm
Architecture. That Includes Apple's Soc. ARM license its micro architecture and
intellectual property to chip manufacturer, chip manufacturer use it as base to
develop their own chips, they are free to modify and adapt the micro
architecture as per their need.
Now let's consider Mobile Phone
landscape.
- Qualcomm is an American Tech Company who manufacturers Snapdragon Soc.
- NVidia, is an American Tech Company who manufacturers Tegra Soc.
- Samsung, is a Korean Tech Company who manufacturers Exynos Soc.
- Mediatek, is a Taiwanese Tech Company who Manufactures Soc, mostly uses Chip Numbers Instead of Brand Name.
- Texas Instrument, is again an American Tech Company who manufacturers Omap Soc.
- Marvell is an American Tech Company who now manufacturers Xscale Soc
- Spreadtrum is a Chinese Tech Company who Manufactures Soc, mostly uses Chip Numbers Instead of Brand Name.
And list goes on on and on as there
are many manufacturers.
Which is better is the question,
well Samsung uses Mediatek, Qualcom, Spreadtrum and Exynos in its phone.
Chip alone does not decide which
phone will be great. Manufacturer, quality control and other components equally
important role. You can find Qualcomm in Many Mobile phones, but their
performance is horrendous. While Spreadtrum a very low end chip manufacturer,
provides a decent performance in many entry level phones that are being sold.
It is more about Brand value, and
any Company has better Brand value, then its products have perceived notion
that everything that company makes are great, reliable. Which is not a case and
is a fallacious reasoning.
Indeed, one thing can be said about
Qualcomm Snapdragon without any doubt that, it is a well-recognized brand with
strong brand value with a lot of recognition.
Then again, mediatek has equally
good Soc. As far as my experience goes with Mediatek and Qualcomm. I have seen
Qualcomm device failing.
Samsung is very experienced in this
field too, it fabricates and manufactures Apple's A series Soc. Samsung Exynos
Soc is good too. Considering the fact that Apple trusts Samsung, when it comes
to Soc manufacturing.
For sake of Comparison, let's
consider, MediaTek MT6752 vs. Snapdragon 615. Now question is which one you
should go for.
The answer is tricky, if you think
that Snapdragon outperform Mediatek, then you are wrong.
Let's consider a few benchmarks.
AnTuTu, Quadrant Standard and Geekbench 3.
AnTuTu
- Snapdragon 615: 37,350 points
- MediaTek MT6752: 44,483 points
Quadrant Standard
- Snapdragon 615: 24,234 points
- MediaTek MT6572: 15,013 points
Geekbench 3
- Snapdragon 615: Single core: 700Multi core: 2,692
- MediaTek MT6752: Single core: 813Multi core: 4,007
As you yourself can see, Mediatek in
this case is way better in terms of raw performance. Then again Qualcomm has
more recognition more so people tend to gravitate towards Qualcom.
In the end all I can say is that One
can’t blindly say which processor is best. To answer that question, one must do
through comparison and analysis and for that we must need to do standardized
bench marking. Each Soc and processor manufacture has its own plus points and
feature set. So it’s always a consumer's choice what they want to buy. Most of
the time Consumers are directly or indirectly affected by marketing and
tactics.
In short my conclusion is that, It’s
really depend on your usage, your budge and price you are willing to spend and
also on the software using that Soc.
